How do I earn a PMI certification?

Do I have to be a member to apply for a PMI certification?
No. PMI membership is separate from PMI certifications. However, as a PMI member, you will have access to many benefits including discounts on your certification exam fee as well as discounts on professional development opportunities to help with maintenance of your certification(s).
What courses qualify for the project management education requirements for certification?
Courses must be consistent with the Project Management Institute's (PMI ®) Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK ®). The project management prep course offered by PMINL (in partnership with PMI Montréal) does qualify (along with other approved education providers).
What is a Project Management Professional (PMP)?
A Project Management Professional (PMP)® is a highly recognized certification for project managers across all industries throughout the globe.
What is a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)?
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification allows an individual to gain recognition for their dedication to professional development while accumulating the necessary hours of experience to qualify to write the PMP Certification exam. None of the certifications are pre-requisites to one another.
What is the PMBOK®?
A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) is PMI's flagship publication and is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry. It has been updated to reflect the latest good practices in project management.
Does my PMI certification have an expiry date?
Most PMI certifications are valid for three years. Depending on your certification, you’ll earn either 30 or 60 PDUs per three-year certification cycle. Please review the Maintain Your Certification information on the PMI website for more details.
Please note: If you hold the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®, you’ll need to retake the exam before the end of your five-year certification cycle. No PDUs are necessary for CAPM® re-certification.
How do I schedule an exam?
For all PMI certifications (with the exception of the CAPM) your exam will occur at one of Prometric’s worldwide testing sites. Schedule your appointment online at Prometric.com/PMI using your eligibility number. For the CAPM, you can schedule your exam at a testing site or in an online proctored environment through Pearson VUE by logging-in to your MyPMI account and following the prompts.
What is the eligibility number and how do I obtain one?
Once your application is approved and payment is received, PMI will email you an eligibility number that you’ll use to schedule your exam appointment. You are eligible to write the exam for one year, and you may take the exam up to three times during that year.
